News Personnel Projects Contact Home

October 2011
Dear Readers,

I see that over 3 years has gone by since my 2008 news update. The intervening years had been hectic with our company successfully completing the design of Carson Graham Secondary, Abbotsford Collegiate and University Hill Secondary Schools. All 3 projects are presently under construction. We also designed the Northern Rockies Regional Recreation Centre, a twin arena, curling rink and community centre project in Fort Nelson, which opened to the public in August 2011, and we are presently designing the attached recreational pool.

A few internal changes have taken place as well. We are sorry to see the retirement of Bob Overland. He has worked at J.M. Bean & Co. for 45 years and formally retired as of August 2011. Bob served as President of the company from 1987 to 2005 when he stepped down to do more traveling. He is looking forward to more travels but has also agreed to maintain close connections with J. M. Bean & Co. including providing consulting services for specific projects when requested.

I am very pleased to announce the addition of 3 more directors of the company. Marvin Ng, P. Eng., Ivan Nikolic, P. Eng. and Nicholas Mo, P. Eng. We welcome these younger members of the management team and look forward to maintaining our high level of service to our clients.

Sincerely,
Stu Tan, P. Eng., President

This social housing project is a LEED Gold targeted building in Terrace, BC. The design includes an open loop ground source heat pump system, a radiant floor heating system, heat recovery ventilators, domestic water preheating using the heat pumps as well as GFX heat exchangers.

The Energy Performance Workshop results predict a 69% energy savings for the above design compared to the CBIP standard. Registration for LEED Gold is pending.

• Trout Lake Ice Rink, Vancouver, BC

This single ice sheet arena was completed for the 2010 Olympics and replaced the old building on the same site. It is a LEED Silver registered project, incorporating high efficiency boilers, heat recovery ventilators and heat recovery from the refrigeration process to pre-heat domestic hot water, heat the ice melting pit and the arena sub-floor.

Presently under construction on the same site is the Community Centre Addition targeted to achieve LEED Gold.
